  • On Monday December 3rd 2012, a total of 150 non perishable food items and over 60 new toys ($400 worth of goods in total) were collected by KRA/San Diego Metro Region Career Center’s for the ‘Support Our Troops’ Community Care Day 2012 Fundraiser. A Casual Friday (Jeans Day) was organized -where everyone who came into work wearing Jeans that day either donated a new toy or $5.00 cash towards purchasing some new toys.   • The Metro Region Career Centers held a Job Ready & Hired Conference for job seekers who are currently in training or completed training to provide them with a set of skills that will help them in transitioning from training to work.

    The Job Ready & Hired Conference presented job readiness workshops designed to provide participants with job searching tools that will help them obtain gainful employment. Some of the workshops presented included: Skills and Accomplishments, Resume Builder, Interviewing Techniques, Social Media and Personal Networking Commercial. As part of the conference, customers also had the opportunity to participate in an Employer Networking Event....

  • Inna Lomack and Paula Duarte who represent the Business Services Department with the San Diego Metro Career Centers, partnered with San Ysidro Health Center to assist with recruitment events for the new King-Chavez Health Center.  San Ysidro Health Center had 20 positions at the King-Chavez Health Center located at 590 South Euclid Avenue, San Diego, California.

  • Richard Trepass has a master’s degree in general management from Harvard.  He now works as a security guard in San Diego. How is this possible? 

    In his search for a job he sent out more than 175 applications and went on 20 interviews.  But no job offers.  To make ends meet he has worked as a census taker, a janitor and now as a security guard. He went to the Metro Career Center for help in his job search and spends many of his days off there looking for a job.

  • This is a great opportunity for veterans and their eligible spouses.  The San Diego Metro Career Centers are offering vouchers for no-cost online IT skills training and certification. 

    The program, in partnership with Microsoft, and with assistance from the U.S. Department of Labor, is called Elevate America and it’s designed to help build the technology skills of veterans and improve their chances of securing technology-related jobs.

  • The number of county residents looking for work during the month of May held steady at 8.8 percent, the same rate during the month of April. The current unemployment rate, when compared to a year ago, is down one percentage point from the 9.8 percent rate in May of 2011.  

    The areas that showed the most improvement in job growth in San Diego County during the past month were:

    • Trade, transportation and utilities (+3,900 jobs)
    • Healthcare and social assistance (+3,700 jobs)
    • Financial services (+2,500 jobs)
    • Educational services (+1,700 jobs)
    • Professional and business services (+1,400 jobs)

  • For 20 years Kim Phung, who is originally from Vietnam, worked at a Carlsbad company as a statistical administrator.  In May of 2010 the company downsized and she was out of work. As she began her job search, her first stop was to enroll at Metro Career Centers.  She attended the various career center workshops and one of the workshops was on volunteering and how it can lead to a permanent job. 

    After a year of job searching, without any luck, she decided to volunteer at the South Metro Career Center and at the San Diego City Clerk’s office.  ...

  • The number of county residents looking for work declined slightly in April.  The San Diego unemployment rate now stands at 8.7 percent, which is the lowest level in three years.  

    The areas that showed the most improvement in job growth include the professional and business services sector, which added 1,400 jobs and the leisure and hospitality industry, which added 1,300 jobs.  The financial services sector also created 1,000 new job openings.
